As caregivers we often push aside our own needs in response to feelings of guilt and obligation. But we need to learn not to lose ourselves while providing care. Boundaries are the key to maintaining our own health and well-being as caregivers. Boundaries can be physical—learning to step away and take a moment for ourselves; they can be personal—learning which emotions belong to us, and which belong to our loved one. Ask yourself. What actions trigger you, and how do you react? We can learn to set limits that feel right for us and our relationships. Remember that you matter too.
